Easter colouring page

The sheet is built around two shapes: a rabbit sitting in profile, and a woven basket beside it holding six decorated eggs. The eggs carry four different patterns between them: stars, flowers, dots and zigzags, all of it drawn as closed line work rather than shading, so every small area can take its own colour. Under both shapes is grass with small flowers scattered through it. The whole page is black outlines on white paper, with no grey tones anywhere to work around.

The rabbit is drawn from the side, which means one ear, one eye and one visible flank. A single flat colour over the body works, but the sheet gives you two places to change tone without much effort: the inside of the ear and the chest under the chin. Making the inner ear a lighter pink or cream than the coat is the one detail that most changes how the animal reads. The outline around the back and haunch is a long unbroken curve, so it is worth colouring along it rather than across it.

Six eggs with four patterns is the part of the sheet that takes the longest and rewards the most planning. One approach is to give every egg the same two colours in a different arrangement, which makes the basket look like a matched set. Another is to treat each egg as its own object with nothing in common with its neighbours. The zigzag egg and the dotted egg both contain a lot of small enclosed shapes, so decide early whether the pattern's background is coloured or left as bare paper.

The basket is drawn as a weave, a grid of short overlapping strips rather than one flat surface. Colouring the whole thing a single brown is fine and quick. If you want the weave to show, alternate two close tones strip by strip and let the line work do the rest; the drawing already separates the strips for you, so no shading is needed at any point. The rim runs across the top as its own band and can take the darker of the two tones.

The grass and the small flowers along the bottom are the background, and the background is the part that can flatten everything above it. Keeping the grass to a single green, lighter than anything on the rabbit or the eggs, holds it behind the two main shapes. The little flowers can pick up a colour already used in the basket, which ties the bottom of the sheet to the top. Leaving some of the grass white is a legitimate finish too, and it keeps the eggs the brightest thing on the page.

This sheet has an obvious moment: the table on Easter morning, or the afternoon before it while something is in the oven. Coloured and cut out, the rabbit makes a card front, and a single egg cut from the basket is about the right size for a place card once a name is written across it. The whole sheet also works flat as a paper mat under a plate. The occasions section holds a Halloween sheet and a Thanksgiving sheet drawn the same way.

Because the egg patterns are small, the tool matters more here than on a page of large open shapes. A fine coloured pencil or a thin-tipped marker reaches inside a star or a dot without covering the line next to it. A broad marker still works if you treat each egg as one solid colour and skip the pattern entirely, which is a real choice rather than a compromise. Two printed copies let you try both approaches on the same drawing and keep whichever one you like.

We laid the page out at A4 and built the PDF to print at full size from a home printer with no scaling. Card is the better paper if anything is going to be cut out and stood up, since the rabbit and the eggs need a little stiffness to hold their shape on a table. The PNG previews on this page show the full drawing at a glance. Print at full size rather than fit-to-page so the basket weave keeps its spacing.
